Description of the Museum See People "behind" →
The Montale Archaeological Park and Open air Museum was opened in April 2004 as an open-air sector of the Civic Archaeological Ethnological Museum of Modena on the site of an ancient “terramara”, about 10 km far from Modena.
The excavations in the Montale mound, begun during the second half of the 1800’s and taken up again after over a century in 1994, brought to light the remains of a terramara, a typical village of the central area of the Po River plain around the middle of the II Millennium B.C. The excavations have been displayed inside a museum space, and they provide the key to the understanding of the open-air museum where, on the basis of the excavation results, a full-size part of the village has been reconstructed complete with ditch, embankment and two large dwellings furnished whit ceramic wares, tools, weapons and clothes faithfully reproducing the originals of 3500 years ago.
Park Activities - The park is open to the public on Sundays and public holidays in the months of April, May, June; September and October. In July, August and weekdays groups on booking (min. 20 people) are accepted. Opening times: from 10am to 7pm (10 – 6 in October).
On opening days, in the open-air museum, skilled experts propose to visitors demonstrations of ancient craft techniques. Activities for school groups are carried out from Mondays to Fridays, from September to June.
Since the date of its opening (April 24th 2004) up to the end of 2006 more than 46.000 people have visited the park.
